ABOUT UKAPRD

Established in 1996 and supported by the UK government, the UK-Africa Partnership for Regional Development (UKAPRD) is a dynamic partnership of government and philanthropic partners, working to facilitate development and reduce poverty in Africa, inline with the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals.

Our teams are based in the UK, Cameroon, and Togo (Secretariat), providing technical assistance and capacity building support for projects across Africa.

We work with bilateral and multilateral development agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals to design and implement tailored, innovative, and adaptable programs.

WHAT WE DO?

EDUCATION

UKAPRD is engaged in developing an action plan for international development assistance to achieve Education for All. The focus areas of the action plan are inclusion, literacy, early childhood education, primary and secondary education, gender parity, quality of education, holistic education, capacity-building, strengthening initiatives on lifelong learning, and education for sustainable development.

REFUGEES / IDP REHABILITATION

A large part of our field Our Causes are geared towards internally displaced people (IDPs) and refugees. With the number of people who have been forcibly displaced doubling over the last decade, their health needs continue to mount, and are not always met. Our roots were put down in the camps set up for refugees. UKAPRD has a long history of assisting and protecting these populations.

MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH

UKAPRD serves as a bridge between Britain's medical community and the developing world. Its Tender Confirmation in the field of emergency medicine, public health and infant and maternal healthcare are characterized by a long-term approach, focusing on the delivery of medical services, particularly in rural areas. UKAPRD's professional training Our Causes in medicine and public health are conducted both in Britain and on-site in host countries.

AGRICULTURE

UKAPRD's agricultural programming deals with the introduction of modern technologies and agro-technical methods designed to increase the levels, sustainability and quality of agricultural production to ensure food security. It also concentrates on introducing effective support systems to enhance the economic viability of agriculture in areas such as marketing, storage and transport, the supply of agricultural inputs, granting of credit and finance to the agricultural sector and upgrading the work of extension services.

DISASTER RESPONSE

Whether it is a sudden emergency or an ongoing crisis, UKAPRD fights to aid people in need around Africa. More than 15 million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes. The human consequences of these crises are devastating. Families struggle to find shelter, to get enough to eat, and to find safe places to rebuild their lives. One in five women in crisis has experienced sexual assault. On average, humanitarian crises are more complex than at any time in the last 15 years, and last nearly three years longer than they used to.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The imperative of rapid economic development and the necessity to absorb the continuous waves of mass immigration has enabled British experts to acquire experience in rural development and community building in an emerging economy of immigrant populations. Focusing on socio-economic development as a tool for poverty eradication, UKAPRD stresses the importance of bottom-up development, concentrating on the contribution of women to the development of their country.

OUR PROJECTS

CONSTRUCTION OF NEW SCHOOLS

For more than 20 years, UKAPRD has been constructing schools in economically developing countries with the aim of eradicating poverty and illiteracy by providing access to education. UKAPRD targets communities with the greatest needs in each country and works hand-in-hand with local populations to build schools, and empower more children and adults to be literate. At UKAPRD, we strive to build as many schools as we can to allow children to get a proper education and break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy. However, it is not always easy, and here in Africa we have encountered several challenges – especially in regards to gender discrimination.

CLINICS / HOSPITALS

UKAPRD exists to serve the healthcare needs of the poor by building high-quality health infrastructure in low-resource settings. UKAPRD has long recognized the crucial link between health, development, and economic growth. Our priority work in the health sector seeks to improve health infrastructure and systems, governance, workforce, and financing. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the region hard. UKAPRD has committed more than $5 billion in assistance to its DMCs in response to the economic, social, and health costs of the pandemic. In 2020 UKAPRD launched a $2 billion Africa vaccine facility to ensure the region gets access to affordable vaccines against COVID-19.

Access to Solar Energy

The energy crisis in Africa incurs economic damages and has affected small and medium-sized buildings (SMBs) that struggle to address increases in power cuts. The crisis also affects public buildings like schools and hospitals. This project responds to the problem through the adoption of sustainable power systems, particularly solar panel installations in selected community-relevant SMBs. The project also seeks to achieve sustainability by building local capacity and providing education and employment opportunities for solar technicians and consultants through training and job placement sessions.
